Greece and the Corinth

Greece and the Corinth

For the first Open Air course of the season, we are heading off to Greece to look at the beautifully preserved rift system around the Corinth Canal.

Whilst many of our trips here look at rift scale processes this trip has a slight twist and will focus on the link between #deepwaterclastic reservoir elements and #normalfaults all preserved on the now (!) uplifted rift flank.

Douglas Paton as lead tutor, with Maggie Hystad Murison covering logistics & HSE and Mark Bentley as second tutor (carrying the bags!).

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

TRACS is pleased to announce that Jackie Mullinor has accepted the role of Business Development Manager.

Jackie started at TRACS in 2008 working as a Petrophysicist and more recently Project Manager. She has worked on a wide range of projects for a diverse portfolio of clients. Jackie will not be saying goodbye to her petrophysical roots but will be spearheading the BD team as TRACS pushes further into the Energy Transition arena while also supporting our traditional E&P clients. We wish Jackie well in her new role.

Geomechanics

Geomechanics

In the last five years, TRACS has seen a sharp increase in demand for geomechanics services across a range of applications. Recent studies include 3D geomechanical models of CCUS store complexes (saline aquifers and depleted gas fields), modelling geomechanics of depleting HPHT fields, wellbore stability, well abandonment, input to hydraulic fracture designs, safe injection limits and the geomechanical impact of thermal effects around injection sites.

Central to these studies is an understanding of in-situ stresses and rock properties, including faults and fractures and their role in containment and rock integrity to ensure project safety, improved economics and adherence to regulatory standards.

From wellbore to reservoir scale, TRACS provides geomechanics services to support production, injection and gas storage. We deliver geomechanics solutions for complex wells and reservoirs using a combination of industry-standard software, proprietary workflows and analytical tools. We can provide guidance and recommendations on data acquisition, appraisal programmes and management strategies, e.g. for wellbore stability.

TRACS supporting gas storage and CCUS projects...

TRACS has supported gas storage and CCUS projects for more than 15 years with early involvement in the UK CCUS programme. Services include assessing reservoir and well integrity at all stages of the CCUS project life cycle as well as license application support.

TRACS has undertaken detailed modelling of several well-known store complexes and recently completed exploration screening of potential North Sea CO2 repositories. We specialise in geomechanical modelling of CO2 store complexes and dynamic modelling of pressure and plume development.

In addition, we provide training to the industry in partnership with colleagues from Heriot Watt University.

Looking for support? TRACS provides a wide range of CCUS services from exploration to monitoring strategy.

Exploration with TRACS

Exploration with TRACS

For the last two years, TRACS has been providing technical support and coaching in applied sequence stratigraphy to a client in southern Africa. Our exploration team applied a play-based exploration workflow incorporating correlation of mega-sequences and sub-sequences, identification of systems tracts, Wheeler plots, petroleum systems analysis, gross depositional environment mapping and play fairway mapping. Building on the fundamentals of exploration analysis we identified and ranked opportunities in terms of risk, uncertainty and value.

Looking for support? TRACS provides a wide range of exploration services from basin-opening studies to prospect evaluation, portfolio analysis and valuations.

CCS master class to meet growing demand

CCS master class to meet growing demand

With 30 years of oil and gas experience, TRACS has advised on the development of oil and gas fields worldwide – many of which are now candidates for safe disposal of CO2.

Our training and reservoir management consultancy has over a decade of experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS), taking on its first client back in 2011. Since then, TRACS has been engaged in numerous UK-led projects to sink CO2 into depleted hydrocarbon fields or saline aquifers in the North Sea.

Demand for TRACS’ experience in CCS has increased significantly over the last 18 months, as government ambition and investors’ need for ESG policies come to the fore, not just in the UK but across Europe and the Middle East.

Therefore, TRACS is pleased to add CCS and Energy Transition to its Master Class Series as part of its training course portfolio. The TRACS master class follows the Story of Carbon from its underground source to post-industrial capture and sequestration back into the ground. From the concepts of the carbon challenge to the sub-surface, wells and facilities issues, TRACS’ industry-trained tutors lead participants through the technical and regulatory hurdles of identifying, evaluating, and developing a CCS resource.

As with all TRACS Training products, we adapt the content according to a client’s needs, and most TRACS courses are bespoke for a client group. With content and timing adjusted to the specific needs of that group (expertise level, reservoir types of interest, reservoir vs surface vs commercial engineering emphasis).

Over the last ten years, TRACS reservoir engineers have adapted their expertise from modelling fluid flow and pressure & temperature changes in the hydrocarbon phase to a simulation of CO2 within potential CCS repositories. TRACS geoscientists and geomechanics specialists have integrated their understanding of the geology and rock strength to estimate the capacity to retain injected CO2. Production technologists and well engineers have been assessing integrity issues for recycling wells, and facilities engineers have evaluated infrastructure and capture options at power stations. Meanwhile, the commercial teams have been considering the economics and regulatory requirements of CCS.

Both the consultancy and training arms of TRACS are applying their skills acquired in oil and gas to the Energy Transition and training the next generation in the context, fundamentals, and details of CCS.

Experts agree that this transition must be a cautious stepping stone approach and an urgent move away from hydrocarbons to more sustainable forms of energy. TRACS has a vital role to play given its experience, strong technical skills, and determination to meet the challenge of the Energy Transition head-on.

vILT - the new normal for training in 2021.

vILT - the new normal for training in 2021.

In 2020 we all quickly converted to online delivery (we had no choice!) and busily converted our courses. In 2021 we realise some training will stay this way, and we are discovering the expected upside aspects of online learning, notably the ease of flexibility.

Since January, TRACS been delivering parts of our reservoir engineering, reservoir modelling, economics and risk, and uncertainty workshops and courses in bite-sized learning chunks for operating companies. These are all tailored to the client's need, and range from single half-day sessions to double-sessions booked a week apart to sets of 3-hour sessions – all instructor-led with class sizes ranging from 1 upwards. All material derived from the TRACS library and content mixed-and-matched between courses as required.

Ultimate tailoring, no airport involved, and the associated reduced costs generally appreciated.
